About Us

This is IRC Gwangju in Gwangju-si, South Korea.

We are an afternoon English Language Institute, and we teach elementary students.

Program

Task-Based Learning (TBL) is a learning method in which children participate in solving presented problems and perform tasks while acquiring the necessary knowledge and skills. This learning approach is designed to enable the acquisition of not only knowledge but also collaboration, communication, and problem-solving abilities.

In English learning, TBL maximizes learning effectiveness by using English as a means in addition to its unique objectives. IRC Language School has devised a 'Korean-style Task-Centered Grammar' considering the realistic situation in Korea, enjoying excellent results.

In IRC Language School's grammar lessons, Task-Based Learning proceeds in the following stages:

  1. Task presentation: Specific tasks are presented for children to work on.
  2. Task performance and problem identification: The child performs tasks with a partner. Although the tasks in this class can mostly be performed without much difficulty, they soon encounter linguistic limitations.
  3. Language learning: Children learn language elements, such as words, sentences, and grammar, necessary for composing sentences. At this point, the teacher provides feedback focusing on form.
  4. Advanced task presentation: A task with more conditions is presented based on the initial task.
  5. Peer correction and task presentation: They work in groups or pairs to perform tasks and present them.
  6. Feedback: The priority of feedback at this time is task ideas, linguistic delivery, and finally, feedback is given with grammar.

Location Description

With a population of 1.4 million, Gwangju Metropolitan City, one of the six largest cities in Korea, is divided into five districts. Gwangju is also regarded as a city rich in culture and art, as evidenced by the on-going exhibitions and performances which make the city all the more vibrant and colorful. Every two years, the Gwangju Biennale features a two-month long contemporary art exhibition that invites international artists to display their theme-based work.

Gwangju has a cooler version of the humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons and rainfall year-round but particularly during the East Asian Monsoon Season in the summer months. Winters, while still cold, are milder than in Seoul and cities further north due to the city's southwesterly position in the Korean peninsula. Summers are hot and humid with abundant precipitation, particularly in the form of thunderstorms. Gwangju is one of the warmest cities in Korea in the summer due to its geographic location.
