Vivien Taylor from the United States of America

(Head Teacher of GCIS Dongtan)

Vivien Taylor from the USA. I am the head teacher at our Dongtan branch and have been working at GCIS for two years. My time at GCIS has been marked with many opportunities for collaboration, growth, and creativity that has helped to enhance my own personal pedagogy. Our curriculum is developed by our in-house R&D team which is run by qualified Native English teachers alongside Korean management. By utilizing the common core state standards, they ensure that our curriculum is best suited to our students and flexible enough to provide support for all learners. Having our R&D team in house is also great because it creates a collaborative environment where teachers feel comfortable going to the team with any issues or needs when it comes to their classes. We have a great community among all our teachers and everyone is professional and friendly, always happy to give advice, help cover a class, or provide any other assistance you may need. The school being one building also adds to the close-knit atmosphere, and we truly feel like a team! The working hours are Monday to Friday from 9am to 6pm, this includes a lunch break with lunch provided, though you are more than welcome to eat elsewhere or bring your own lunch. Each teacher typically teaches 6-7 kindergarten classes that are 40 minutes long each, as well as some after school and elementary classes. Teachers on average teach 24-26 hours a week with 26 hours being the maximum. There is plenty of prep time and classes are small, usually 7-10 students to a class with a maximum of 12 students. We offer a wide variety of subjects like speaking and phonics, and while the R&D team provides the curriculum and syllabus there is lots of room for teachers to create their own lesson plans and adapt it to their own teaching style. Aside from regular classes GCIS also has special classes like P.E., Art, Theater, and many more that are fun and exciting and give our students lots of opportunity to play and explore their creativity. Not only that, but each year we produce our own musical (last year it was Aladdin!) which is performed every Christmas for their parents in our own auditorium. This is something unique to our school that adds to our sense of community. As far as facilities, Dongtan has plenty of classrooms, two libraries, a cafeteria, gym, outdoor soccer, basketball, and baseball fields, an orchestra room, computer lab, and more! These facilities are great and the school is always well stocked with any materials you may need for crafting, games, etc.! I have truly enjoyed my time teaching here and hope to get to work with you in the future.

Katie Cochran from the United States of America

(Head Teacher of GCIS Yeongtong)

I have been working at the Yeongtong branch of GCIS for 2 years now, and I am currently the head teacher. With over two years of teaching experience, including more than a year of private music instruction, I have thoroughly enjoyed my time teaching children at the kindergarten level. Each year has been rewarding and filled with growth, both for my students and myself. The curriculum at GCIS is thoughtfully developed by English-speaking managers, ensuring a professional and well-structured program. Any issues that arise are quickly and efficiently addressed with the support of the Korean teachers and management staff, fostering a collaborative and supportive environment. Managers, R&D staff, and other teachers are always supportive and willing to help with any questions we might have. Our working hours are 9:00 AM to 5:50 PM, Monday through Friday, with a lunch break provided. During the typical week, teachers teach a maximum of 26 hours a week with a great amount of time to do preparation work in the mornings as well as many afternoons. We do teach elementary students as well, but there is ample time to get work done. GCIS also provides space

for creative growth, allowing teachers to voice their opinions and change things if needed. The children benefit from classes like music, dance, and acting, which adds a dynamic and enriching element to their education. There is also a musical production during the winter, which allows the students to embrace their creative spirit while also practicing English. We also have a gym teacher and an on-site chef who prepares meals for the teaching staff as well as the students. I am excited to welcome new teachers at GCIS, and I hope we can work together in the future. GCIS provides a vibrant and nurturing environment that fosters both professional development and personal satisfaction. Our supportive community of staff and structure make it a great place for educators to thrive. Whether it’s collaborating with colleagues or engaging with the children, every day offers a chance to make a meaningful impact and enjoy a fulfilling teaching experience.

Brianna Thomas from the United States of America

(Head of Music & Arts)

I have been working at the Yeongtong branch since September 1st, 2023. I have had a wonderful time teaching at this kindergarten because the teaching environment at this school is collaborative and supportive. All of the teachers that work here understand that the main priority is our students’ growth and are open to adapt their teaching to achieve this. In addition, the Korean Co-teachers, Research and Development team, and Head Teachers are always on hand for help and are a great support to the English teachers.

Working hours are from 9am-6pm, Monday-Friday with a one hour lunch break where they can rest with other teachers. Teachers teach six 35 minute classes per day with a maximum of 12 children in each class. Teachers also teach 1.5hour elementary classes Monday/Wednesday/Friday. The Head Teachers create many resources such as lesson plans, visual aids, multimedia resources, and projects to use in a variety of classes. However, in subjects such as speaking, homeroom teachers do have freedom and flexibility to create their own lesson plans that better showcase their individual teaching styles.

My favorite part about this school is the musical opportunities given to the children! Students learn about acting, singing, and dancing from the musical teachers as they prepare for a winter performance. The ideas and concepts they learn in theater classes, such as plot, setting, and characters, apply to their core english classes. Furthermore, the students are able to learn interpersonal skills such as team work, imagination, and creativity. Such exploration and development is exactly what makes me excited to continue working with this school into the 2025-2026 school year.
